Smudging Guidelines & Ceremonial Use Form

The Circle of Indigenous Nations (COIN) and American Indian Student Cultural Center (AISCC), in collaboration with Housing & Residential Life at the University of Minnesota (UMN), recognize that the support of American Indian/First Nations/Alaskan Native students is a shared responsibility. In our support efforts, we recognize the sacred practice of smudging as a way of life for some American Indian/First Nations/Alaskan Native people and welcome this time-honored practice within student residential spaces. With respect to the ceremonial use of smoke, American Indian/First Nations/Alaskan Native students may carry out—within the privacy of their residence hall rooms—cultural practices consistent with traditional ceremonies and observances that involve the use of sacred plants.

The Circle of Indigenous Nations and American Indian Student Cultural Center serve as a designated venue where smudging and pipe ceremonies may, at any time, be conducted by students, staff, faculty, and community members and may be used at the start/end of meetings, counseling sessions, and other events and occasions including, but not limited to, other contexts.

Please view our full Smudging Guidelines/Policy document, and/or consult the ceremonial use notification form if needed.
